You probably have questions about this exciting, new, annual event. We hope that we can quickly answer those questions to your satisfaction. If you do not find the answers to your questions, do not hesitate contacting us directly by email.



What is the purpose of this event?
In addition to wanting to put on quite a shin dig, Harbortown Rotary and Superior Rotary wanted to host this fund raising event so as to donate money to support the kinds of organizations and activities (mainly involving youth) that Rotary has traditionally supported in the Twin Ports. In 2007, we raised more than $58,000 for the Breast Program at SMDC.


Who can participate?
Teams consist of 20 paddlers, a drummer, a steersperson, a manager, and 2 alternates, for a total maximum of 25. Of the 20 paddlers, 8 must be women. You must be 14 years old to paddle on a team.


How long / when is the race?
The race event is Saturday. The 400 meter competitive and recreational races take place morning and early afternoon. Festivities will be held both evening and include live music, food, an award ceremony and other special activities.


How do I sign up?
Print a Registration Form and mail it to 1627 N. 34th Street, Superior WI 54880 along with $100.00 non-refundable registration fee. (The Festival also accepts VISA or Mastercard which can be provided on the form.) In June registered teams will receive a participation packet and a pledge packet from SMDC. The packets will include an race rules, team forms and waivers, pledgings materials and other useful information. How much does it cost?
This fun and exciting fundraising extravaganza is brought to you for a low, low price of $800 per team. This fee includes the paperwork handling, dragonboat lease for practice on the night before the race and the day of the race, awards, as well as other worthy items. A $50.00 discount will be given for registering by May 1, 2009 and providing full payment by July 2, 2009.


Who is sponsoring the event?
Harbortown Rotary Club and Superior Rotary Club, with lots of help from other community organizations like the Duluth Boat Club who does the practice and race logistics and Kiwanis who provides children activities.


What is a dragon boat?
A dragon boat is a water craft designed to hold 20 paddlers, 1 drummer, and 1 person to steer. The vessels used in the United States and in Canada are slightly wider than the original dragon boats so as to accommodate larger framed paddlers.


Where does the race and its festivities take place?
All events will take place at Barkers Island, Superior, Wisconsin.


How many people will be at this thing, anyway?
At our 2007 festival, we had 83 teams, which is more than 1,800 people, just in the race, not to mention the thousands of people who came to Barkers Island to watch the event. We expect even more people to come to this year's event. Additionally, there will be volunteers and many race officials plus news media. At an event like this, you will not have to worry about being all alone!


How many famous people will be there?
Undoubtedly, there will be many famous people there. But it's a secret so you'll just have to come to the race to find out.


What is the deal with painting the eyes of the dragon?
As a part of the dragon boat tradition, the races begin with the painting of the eyes. Do not worry, however, because the only eyes painted are those on the dragon boats themselves. This tradition is to signify the awakening of the dragon and has been done for centuries.


Has anyone died at one of these races?
Not at ours. We have not looked into the history of any other races, but expect the fierce competition has driven some teams to disqualifying actions. Trained emergency staff will be available in the unlikely event that any medical problems occur at the race.
