Imagine the sun beating on your face as you listen to the lapping of the waves of the sleek boat in which you sit. The smell of the water and sweat combine with racing of your heart to begin the adrenaline rush that is about to take place. Bang! A gun is fired into the air and your eyes open as you simultaneously thrust your paddle into the water. The drummer pounds a beat for you and the nineteen other paddlers to follow as your multicolored boat glides toward the finish line four hundred meters away. While your mind is telling you that you are only in the recreational division race, the competition has overcome your senses. Your eyes are focused on the destination ahead, completely ignoring the other teams to each side of your boat and the surrounding bay.
You can barely contain yourself as you glide past the markers that designate the finish. Another rower two boats over stands up to shout a victory cry, but tips himself and the twenty-one other members before having a chance...

The Lake Superior Dragonboat Festival will be run in the standard dragonboat race splendor and under the traditional restrictions. Each team is comprised of a maximum of 25 members, which includes 1 Team Manager, 1 Drummer, 1 Steersperson, 20 paddlers, and 2 alternates. As in other dragonboat competitions, each team must compete with a minimum of eight women per boat per race.
The festival / race will be held August 22 - 23, 2008 at Superior, Wisconsin's Barkers Island.
